One ball landed in what was called "Javelin Crater" (the rod you see in the crater was the staff to the Solar Wind Collector). If you look carefully, you can see the golf ball toward the bottom of this photo below the rod. Photo: Nasa</image:caption>

<image:caption>A PUTTY knife which drifted out of space shuttle astronaut Piers Sellers' tool kit as he did repairs is being tracked through space by Nasa. The £1,100 spatula is being watched by military radars at 20 sites worldwide as it hurtles at 25 times the speed of sound towards Earth, orbiting the planet every 90 minutes. But Nasa dismissed fears the tool could be a hazard to the shuttle or the international space station saying: "We have no concerns." Shuttle commander Steve Lindsey filmed the spatula as it floated over Discovery and into space. Mission controllers teased British-born Sellers by making him count his other five spatulas before he was allowed back aboard the spacecraft. This image made from NASA TV, shows a close-up view of several carbon-carbon tiles and astronaut Mike Fossum's hands as he works with a test material and spatula in Discovery's payload bay .</image:caption>

<image:caption>A feather from Baggin, the Air Force Academy's mascot falcon, left behind on the Moon by the Apollo 15 astronauts in 1971. Near the end of Apollo 15, Scott carried out a version of the classic feather/ bowling ball experiment, in order to show that in a vacuum, any two objects dropped together will land at the same time. Scott did it with a hammer and a feather, but the result was the same. At the end, he left the feather — taken from Baggin, the Air Force Academy's falcon mascot — on the moon's surface.</image:caption>

By the time of Apollo, Hasselblad and NASA were working hand-in-hand to produce the 500EL, suited for long-duration flight and the vagaries of the lunar environment. The manufacturer built a high-capacity film holder, while Eastman Kodak invented a thinner film emulsion — a combination that resulted in getting hundreds of shots out of a single magazine. <image:caption>This full pressure glove is part of the pair worn by astronaut Ed White during the Gemini 4 mission in June 1965. The gloves were designed and constructed by the B.F. Goodrich Company. The David Clark Company modified them for use in the Gemini program. The glove is constructed of two layers - an internal rubber/Neoprene pressure bladder, and a nylon upper cover-layer, with a neoprene-impregnated nylon palm which was designed to prevent objects from slipping out of the astronaut's hands during weightlessness. The NASA - Manned Spacecraft Center transferred the gloves to the Museum in 1967.</image:caption>

Lunar rakes were employed on Apollo 15-17, from July 1971 to December 1972. This artifact was used for training. This was transferred to the Museum in 1978 from NASA.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Animation made from five LROC images of the Apollo 12 landing site, ordered from sunrise to sunset, and showing the changing length and location of the shadow cast by the U.S. flag erected by the crew. The frames are: (1) M131806467LC, Sun 8 degrees above the eastern horizon; (2) M114104917RC, 32 degrees, east; (3) M137699517LC, 59 degrees, west; (4) M117650516RC, 9 degrees, west; (5) M132983773RC , 6 degrees, west. LROC images courtesy NASA/GSFC/Arizona State University. The Apollo 12 moon landing occurred on November 19, 1969. The crew spent 31.5 hours on the lunar surface before returning to lunar orbit. A U.S. flag was erected early in EVA-1. As indicated in an overall discussion of the six flags left on the lunar surface, there are questions as to whether the flag material has survived 40-plus years in the lunar environment or whether any of the flag poles had fallen, either during the Lunar Module liftoff or anytime afterward. This article resolves this issue for Apollo 12.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Objects - Apollo 11</image:title>
<image:caption>In August 2011, the author combined LROC images of each Apollo site taken at roughly the same orientation (i.e. spacecraft-to-lunar surface site angle) but with different Sun angles to show the travel of shadows. Combined with knowledge of the Apollo site maps which show where the flag was erected relative to the Lander, long shadows cast by the flags at three sites - Apollo 12, Apollo 16, and Apollo 17 - show that the these flags are still “flying”, held aloft by the poles. On page 239 in his book, Return to Earth, Buzz says that, during the liftoff from the Moon, "There was no time to sight-see. I was concentrating intently on the computers, and Neil was studying the attitude indicator, but I looked up long enough to see the flag fall over." As expected, there is no indication of a flag shadow in Apollo 11 LROC images. Figure 3-15 from the Apollo 11 Preliminary Science Report shows the location where the flag was deployed. The second and third frames in the animation shows ground disturbed by the crew between the MESA and the TV camera. The flag was deployed in that area.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This stack displays the five LROC images details used to make the animation at the top of the page. The vertical yellow lines approximate the east-west location of the flagpole. In the early morning images at the top of the stack, the flag shadows start from points west of the flagpole and end farther west. The situation is reversed for the late afternoon images at the bottom of the stack. The vertical red lines approximate the east-west location of the S-band antenna. With the antenna on its side, its shadow will be 'attached' to the antenna.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Objects - American Flag</image:title>
<image:caption>Detail from Apollo 12 photo AS12-47-6983 showing the deployed flag and its shadow. The latch failed on the pivot designed to hold the top edge of the flag out perpendicular to the pole on a supporting rod, so the flag hung limp. The photo was taken at about 1455 UTC on 19 November 1969. The Sun's elevation was 9.2 degrees. Platoff describes the flag as being 5 by 3 feet (1.5 by 1.0 meters). Because the supporting rod is close to vertical, we can estimate that the part of the pole above ground is about 7 feet (2.1 m) tall and that the bottom of the flag is about 2 feet (0.6 meters) off the ground. On level ground, the far end of the shadow would be about 13 meters from the pole. The bottom of the flag is about 0.5 m above the surface and its shadow would be about 3 meters from the pole. <image:title>Objects - Gnomon</image:title>
<image:caption>This gnomon is like those used on the lunar surface by Apollo astronauts during their scientific and photographic tasks. A gnomon is a gimbaled stadia rod mounted on a tripod so that the rod was free to point vertically. When deployed on the lunar surface, the shadow cast by the staff indicated sun angle and, therefore, direction. The rod length and the painted scale provided a reference for estimating the sizes of nearby objects. Shades of gray on the rod ranged in reflectivity from 5% to 35% and a color scale enabled more accurate determination of rock and soil colors by comparison. The gnomon configuration was a little different for each Apollo flight. This particular gnomon was qualified for flight, but never used on a mission. It is similar to the one used on the early lunar missions (Apollo 11, 12, and 14) because it has color scales affixed to the rod and not the legs. NASA transferred this to the Smithsonian in 1974. <image:title>Objects - Hammock</image:title>
<image:caption>Based on the experience of the Apollo 11 astronauts, who spent their rest periods on the lunar module floor, hammocks designed to attach to the interior of the LM ascent stage were provided for the lunar module astronauts from Apollo 12 on. Made of beta cloth and adjustable with straps, the hammocks helped reduce the cooling effects of contact with the cabin floor (the Apollo 11 astronauts had reported being too cold to sleep comfortably) as well as a softer support. Two unflown hammocks (S/N 0004 and S/N 0006) were transferred to the Smithsonian in 1975 from the Kennedy Space Center. Image & Text: airandspace.si.edu</image:caption>
